Do You Worry About Size…?
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed so you don't miss any of the NEW IDEAS posted twice per day. Thanks for visiting!
I have to admit, for the past few weeks I have been totally obsessed with it… I have worked late into the night, thinking of nothing else…
I have tried lots of remedies, I have become a shameless “Link Tart” I have posted on hundreds of high traffic sights, I have tweaked things I have no idea about, I have added so many tricky plugins that my plugin folder now groans under the pressure.
And the results…
Yes my traffic has increased dramatically, but I am no where near the levels the experts talk about, however I was the very grateful recipient of some very healthy traffic increases from ProBlogger after they posted a picture of my sailboat on their site.
But today, I discovered a very important lesson, SIZE DOESN’T MATTER…
You see, I posted a story earlier in the week which I illustrated with one of my Biro drawings , which I dutifully linked to my other blog which displays all my artwork .
It gets so few hits a day, it’s almost embarrassing (let me just say, I don’t need to include my toes most days to count the hits)
But yesterday, it received a few more, (This time I needed to use one foot to keep count) and in my emails in-box, I discovered 2 emails. One from Europe and one from the U.S. both expressing an interest in obtaining an ongoing supply of my artwork. A couple of phone calls later, two very healthy ongoing income streams were established.
As I sat back in the cockpit of my sailboat with an obligatory glass of celebratory wine, I mused on the irony of it all…
With everybody chasing, from site to site, seeking with almost gold rush type fervor, the huge volumes of traffic that can only be generated with devilishly clever stunts, or chance induced swarms from Digg or Technoratti, I had produced similar financial results with a mere handful of viewers.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting you shouldn’t be doing all this “traffic building stuff, in-fact, my own good fortune, is a direct result of my own shameless activity.
The Message…
My message, for what it’s worth, is: Don’t give up just because your numbers don’t match the “BIGGIES”, Size isn’t everything, building sales is a conversion game, it’s no use building mega traffic if they don’t purchase anything.
Big has it’s own problems…
Mega traffic has it’s own problems, it’s very fickle, it will swarm off somewhere new, the minute they discover a new trend.
For most of us mere mortals, it is often far wiser to develop new, unique niches, where we can build solid relationships with high quality content that will result in far better conversion rates. Once you have developed and nurtured the trust of your readers, you are in a far better position to sell higher value items, at far better conversion rates.
So will I keep working on traffic…
Of course I will, now my nasty greed buttons have been tweaked, I know there is far more business out there, only now, I won’t be quite so obsessed by my apparent lack of size.
You’ve just demonstrated the difference between having lots of traffic and having targeted traffic.
Lots of targeted traffic is even better
