Never underestimate the power of the “un-ordinary” to grab attention.
Our brains are programmed to disregard the predictable (if everything got through, there would be no processing power left to concentrate on the really important stuff) The problem is, most Advertising fails to interrupt this survival reflex, long enough to deliver its offer or “pick me” message.
So when you do something as simple, but UNPREDICTABLE as the photo below, you break through and earn the opportunity to deliver your Advertising message.

The Gorge Grown Farmers Market deserves a standing ovation for this brilliant promotion.
Imagine the attention they captured with these clever devices. It’s a great example of how to stretch a budget.

I have had so many requests for these two posts I have decided to post them again for new reader.
The first is a link to my FREE eBook about Advertising.
simply click on the pic below to download the pdf file.

The second is an optical illusion.
Some will say she is spinning anticlockwise, others clockwise and some will see her spinning both ways.
What do you see?
(no it’s not some sort of trickery in the file)
If you enjoy either or both of these items please send a link to your friends.

I’m sorry if you don’t get this…
Let me try and explain… (Which will probably make it even more obscure)
Cricket is a sport that has almost religious significance in countries that were colonized by the English, and we now take great pride in beating them at.
Vegemite is Australia’s favorite breakfast spread, it is a yeast extract, bitter in taste and almost black in color, and based on the English product called Marmite.
So all this has been combined into a very clever piece “In Humor” celebrating inter-country rivalry using highly emotive symbols.
Get It?… Oh well I did try… It’s sort of an Australian version of the combination of “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, Peanut Butter and Jelly, and Baseball.

Seth Godin says… BE DIFFERENT or BE FORGOTTEN
Wow! No one is ever going to forget this place. The Skeleton Bar (I wonder why they called it that) was designed by Hans Rudi Giger who worked on the movie ‘Aliens’ and got a number of awards including Oscar for the best special effects.
Just imagine how much free publicity this place gets. OK, OK I know it must have cost a fortune to create, but lots of bars spend this sort of money merely to copy the cookie cutter “trend of the day” and achieve no point of difference that is even slightly memorable.
The whole point is… the decoration of your premises are a great opportunity to be different, be remembered and yield bucket loads of FREE publicity.

O.K. It’s clever, it certainly grabs your attention…
But the yuk component is so powerful, I suspect your senses would be in such a state of surprise and recoil, your brain would be in no condition to absorb and remember the message.

Frequent readers will know I love the pranks of street and graffiti artists.
Here is a great example of how these clever artists break through, grab our attention and put a smile on our faces.
Maybe it’s time we got rid of some of the conservative Advertising people.
You know the ones. The ones that expend enormous energy stoking our egos and extracting ever increasing budgets from us.
Maybe we should them with some of the raw creative energy that is working for FREE, and often far more effectively, in our streets.

To graphically show the effects of beach pollution…
Satchi and Satchi collected trash from various beaches, packaged it to look like seafood and displayed it at local farmers’ markets. These pics are from a print run of posters for those who didn’t attend the market.

Now here’s a new toilet idea you should put somewhere in your business if you want to generate some interesting comment.
Please don’t blame me if it’s not all good.
But one thing I can absolutely guarantee you… It WILL be noticed.
